Lunettes Opticians in Sleaford, Grantham and Ruskington was announced winner for their successful campaign where they teamed-up with local schools to collect old, or unwanted glasses to help others who may not have access to eye care.
The practice won the Association of Optometrists (OAP) Award for the Optometrists School Recycling Campaign which encouraged hundreds of pupils from twelve Lincolnshire primary schools to collect over 1000 glasses on behalf of Vision Aid Overseas, a charity that has helped over 13 million children and adults in developing countries to see.
This award follows previous success when Lunettes Opticians in Ruskington received the OAP Young Practice of the Year Award which recognises the exceptional work being done at the practice.
Optometrist and Lunettes Practice Director, Tushar Majithia, said he was delighted to win another prestigious industry award, adding: “The whole practice team, local schools and the community as a whole got behind this campaign and so it’s great to have all their effort and support recognised. I would like to thank everyone who took part in this campaign by collecting and donating old or unwanted glasses which will go a long way in making a difference to someone’s quality of life.”
“Our campaign not only helped such a worthy cause, it also helped educate and raise the awareness of the importance of eye care and having regular eye tests for children, their parents and extended families,” added Tushar.
Schools which took part in the Lunettes campaign included, Ancaster CoE Primary School, Welbourn CoE Primary School, Caythorpe Primary School, Colsterworth CoE Primary School, Little Gonerby CoE Infant School, St Anne's CoE Primary School, Cranwell Primary School, Ruskington Chestnut Street CoE Primary School, Winchelsea Primary School, St Sebastian’s CoE Primary School, Allington with Sedgebrook Primary School and Borrowby CoE Primary School.
Helen Duckett, Headteacher of Winchelsea Primary School in Sleaford, which took part in the campaign last year, said: “We have an Eco Club in the school which is all about recycling, so this campaign fit in well with that. There’s also the charitable aspect to the campaign which is all about helping someone who is not quite as fortunate, and this is an important message for all the children and something we discussed in class.”
The winners of the AOP Awards 2018 were announced on 28 January at a national awards ceremony at London Excel.
